Continuing training: Coaching, courses and seminars

Coaching is the best method for you to continue developing as a pilot. Unfortunately is the Swiss license often no more than a basic training. Many safety-relevant aspects and decisive tactical points for cross-country flying can be only mentioned briefly. In reality in paragliding one has never finished learning.

Freshly licensed pilots need a coach, and even advanced pilots use our coaching to teach them the next level. For you to further develop as a pilot, we propose a theory course in 7 double lessons, safety trainings, individual coaching, tandem pilot training, miniwing and speed flying courses, and many other things.

High altitude flights

Flying... higher, farther and longer

You will be ready for your first big flight when you can inflate and control the glider on the ground under different wind conditions, and you have practiced good landing technique on the training slope. In this training step, the goal is that you become progressively more and more autonomous. This means a lot of flight practice in big flights and some theory in easy to digest lumps. The more time you invest in your paragliding training, the fastest you will be ready for the license exam.

As student pilot, you will get introduced step by step into flying techniques under the monitoring of the flight instructor, through radio instructions. For each flight, you get detailed instructions for a technical exercise adapted to your level. You learn flying maneuvers, get your first experience of thermal flying and try to increase progressively the duration of your flights. You learn to assess the challenges of take-off and landing places and you take part actively in the weather briefing to become able to assess the conditions in the air from the ground.

As you get more experienced, you will depend less and less on the instructions of the flight instructor. Eventually, you become able to perform the landing approach autonomously. As you progress, we let you fly "with a long leach" and circle into thermals.

Refresher course

Individual coaching after the license

You can really enjoy flying only if you know what you are doing with your glider. You can benefit from our experience also after the license and continue to develop your pilot skills.

In the last years, the construction and technology of gliders have continued to develop. This has brought improvements in safety, gliding performance and behavior in thermals. This has opened up new possibilities, and we help you to use them. Routine is a good requirement for you to feel good when you are flying solo. We recommend our coaching in case of lack of routine, switching from an old-type glider to a modern glider, or changing to a higher class of glider certification.

Coming back to the world of paragliding

After a long pause in your paragliding activity, it is strongly recommended to take a refresher course with us.The movement sequences can be a bit rusty, in the interest of safety it is preferable to reassimilate them. It is possible that your weather judgment capacity needs to be adjusted or some misconceptions need to be corrected. We take people getting back to paragliding at the level where they currently are. Our paragliding school takes you with a personalized refresher program to a better level of safety and autonomy.

Just come to us. We will set up for you a very personalized practical course, adapted to your level of knowledge and know-how. As licensed pilot, you can benefit from the supervision and logistics of our training program, and you always have the freedom to go cross-country flying in good conditions.

How much does paragliding cost?

Paragliding is by far the most affordable flying sport. As soon as you have your own equipment and fly autonomously as licensed pilot, the cost stay very modest. And if you are so into it, it might cost you all your other good weather outdoor activities :-)

A complete equipment for your training phase - glider wing, harness and reserve - will cost you between CHF 3500 (second-hand) and about CHF 5500 (new).

All the transport costs related to the training amount to about CHF 500.- in total.

As soon as you are flying with your own equipment, you must have a third party liability insurance. Most pilots from Switzerland are insured through the collective insurance contract of the Swiss Hangliding Federation (SHV) at Generali, with a yearly fee of CHF 73.

The examination for the license, which has unlimited validity, consists in a theoretical exam followed by a practical exam. For each exam, the SHV collects a fee of CHF 125.

In some flying sites, there is a small fee for takeoff or landing, as a rule CHF 2 per flight or CHF 5 per day. This is how the clubs compensate the farmers for the use of their meadows where we takeoff or land. That's all.

License course

The all-in-one package for the license

In the License Course of the Flight school Magiclift, which takes you from the initiation day to the license exam, you can do as many flights as you need to obtain the pilot license, during your training period.

The minimum requirement for the license is of 50 flights under supervision of a flight instructor, in a minimum of 5 different flying sites. As we are frequently changing flying site to ensure a solid training of our students, you will be able to demonstrate at the practical exam a personal flying experience in a least 15 different flying sites.

You have 18 months for unlimited flights in preparation of the license exam. Until your fifth flight, we lend you the appropriate equipment. After the fifth flight, you decide if you want to buy your own equipment or continue by renting the school equipment.

The success at the license practical exam marks the end of your training, and gives you the right to evolve autonomously in the airspace.

We continue to accompany you also after the license!

As licensed pilot, you can discover with us new flying sites abroad or attend one of our continuing training sessions, and thereby continue to benefit from the Magiclift flight school guidance. Pilots getting back to paragliding after a long pause, who want to reopen their long-folded glider and take a refresher course, are also warmly welcome to join our training flights.

Basic course

Practice inflating and controlling the wing, take-off and landing

In the Basic course at our school, you get optimally prepared for the next step of your training: the high altitude flights. On the training slope, you mainly train launching and landing safely confidently, during about 4 half-days. You make starting exercises and short gliding downhill with radio instructions, in good conditions. You get direct feedback for each start exercise and landing from the flight instructor.

With a bit more wind, we practice controlling the glider on the ground. In the technical jargon, we call this "ground control", which can make almost as much fun as big flights. Training a lot on the ground gives you a better feeling for your wing and makes you a better pilot in the air.

The Basic Course is relatively intense physically. It is the training period during which you burn the most calories. In the evening, you will be tired but happy. To be progress more efficiently, as a rule, 2 students share an equipment and help each other for starting preparation. In this way, you can make short breaks and be fully focused when it is your turn to practice.

We announce the training hill sessions to our students via a WhatsApp chat. In addition, the fixed initiation days are available as scheduled options for progressing through the first stage of training.

Initiation day

Starting to play with the wing...

In a paragliding initiation day, you will get familiar with the equipment and learn its correct handling. You will experience in a playful way how easy it is to take off with an easy-to-handle, well-behaved school glider of modern construction: on a slight slope, you pull the glider above your head, learn to control it on the ground, and practise take off and landing. Your first trials give you a feeling of successful progression and you make your first hops. After few trials, you are already able to make your first short flights over the training slope. To progress quickly, you will get direct and immediate feedback on all your start attempts and landings.

After this initiation day, you evaluate whether you have a personal affinity for paragliding or not. If you have picked up the virus of flight, you can get the cure for it through the Basic Course or Licence Course at our school.

Paragliding holidays

Paragliding trips and flying holidays - exploring other countries with a glider

In a paragliding trip, you can gain in little time a lot of flying experience and routine. There are numerous beautiful flying sites abroad to discover and explore. Although Switzerland offers a great variety of flight possibilities, some of our home country's starting places are sometimes difficult or impossible to reach: deep snow, cable car revisions or extended periods of bad weather conditions can occasionally substantially narrow the flying options.

For you to get the chance to explore other countries and their exceptional flying sites, the Magiclift paragliding school offers various flying trips. In this way, we extend the flying season over the cold season, and invite the weather gods to treat us with a nice flying weather.

While some of our trips are specifically recommended for experienced pilots, some are also suited for beginners. We can also gladly take non-flying, accompanying persons with us in our trips.
